The Olympic line-up on Monday August 18 for GTA and Durham Region athletes

With seven medals under team Canada's belt, hopes remain high as kayaking got underway Monday.

Your GTA and Durham Region athletes seeing action on Monday include:

Isabelle Rampling of Newmarket and her partner Marie-Pier Boudreau Gagnon of Montreal got off to a strong start, finishing 6th as synchronized swimming gots underway.  The freestyle competition will be held Tuesday. Read about Isabelle.

Adam van Koeverden (Oakville) won his heat in K1 1000 Olympic kayaking and advanced to the finals on Friday. Steve Jorens (Aurora) finished 7th in his heat in the K2 1000, and Brady Reardon (Burlington) finished 5th in the K4 1000. Both have qualified to go on to the semifinals.

The women's softball team, including Erin McLean (Whitby) and Robin Mackin (Newmarket), lost to Japan 6-0 today. The next step for Canada hinges on the outcome of the Australia-Venezuela game that's underway.  Australia was leading 9-0 after four innings and Canada will meet Australia in the semifinals if Australia wins. It's a silver medal for the Canadian show  jumping team of Mac Cone (King City), Eric Lamaze (Schomberg), Ian Millar (Perth) and Jill Henselwood (Oxford Mills). Cone was forced to withdraw today from the individual competition after his horse took a misstep. Lamaze was in first heading into today's round and second today. The legendary Millar posted an eighth place finish today. Rounding out the team was Henselwood who ended the day in 26th spot.  All three go on to the medal round in individual jumping is Thursday.

Whitby's Priscilla Lopes-Schliep has qualified for the final in the 100M hurdles with a third place finish in her heat today. Read all about Lopes-Schliep.

Karen Cockburn (Stouffvile) won a silver medal in trampoline and Rosannagh MacLennan (King City) placed seventh.  Read about them.

On the baseball diamond, Canada lost to Japan 1-0 bringing their record to 1-4. "I was giving him a fastball that I wanted him to either swing at and put in play or take for a strike," said pitcher Chris Begg of Uxbridge of the 0-2 pitch that gave Astunori Inaba a home run. "I didn't want to fall behind 3-0 so I gave him one to hit, it was a little bit higher than I'd like and he put a pretty good swing on it." Canada is virtually assured of finishing out of the top four and semifinal play. They meet Netherlands on Tuesday and Chinese Taipei Wednesday.
