Long way to go in diverting our waste

Re: 'Durham doesn't need an incinerator despite 'acceptable risk'', letter to the editor from Dianne Cross, March 3.
Over the last couple of months on garbage days, I have been paying higher attention to what and how much residents of Clarington have been disposing.
The unfortunate fact is that the amount of garbage outweighs and outnumbers the amount of recycling being done by these residents. In many cases, there are no compost bins, although I do think some residents have their own pile in their backyards. The fact that Clarington does not recycle half the plastic products with recycling labels on them is repulsive.
Providing jobs and producing an alternative energy source is something that has to be looked forward to and until the municipality gets more options in its plastic recycling and residents start sorting their garbage more fully, the 'acceptable risk' is fine.
