The flag bearer for the Beijing opening ceremonies, kayaker Adam van Koeverden is among the favourites in the K-1 500-metre and 1000-metre events. He is the reigning world and Olympic champion in the 500-metre and won silver in the 1,000-metres at last year's worlds and bronze in Athens in 2004. These are van Koeverden's second Summer Games.
